Which Chainsaw Is Right for You?
Chainsaw Buying Guide
Choosing the right chainsaw starts with one question: what work will you do most often?
Pruning, preparing firewood and felling trees place very different demands on a machine. The right chainsaw gives you the performance you need without unnecessary weight, helping improve control, comfort and productivity.
Before choosing, consider what you will cut, the size of the material, how often you will use the chainsaw and whether you will work from the ground or in a tree. Your preferred power source, battery or petrol, will also help narrow down your choice.
Choose a chainsaw for the work you perform most frequently rather than an occasional exceptional task.
Rear-handle or top-handle chainsaw?
Rear-handle chainsaws are designed for use on the ground, with front and rear handles providing a stable two-handed working position.
They cover a wide range of applications, from garden maintenance, pruning and firewood preparation to tree felling and professional forestry work.
Smaller models prioritise low weight and manoeuvrability, making them practical for lighter cutting tasks. Larger professional saws provide the performance and guide-bar options needed for more demanding timber work.
Top-handle chainsaws have a compact configuration specifically designed for professional arborist work in trees. They are used for applications such as aerial pruning and tree removal.
These specialist chainsaws are intended for trained professional arborists and should not be considered general-purpose alternatives to rear-handle models. ECHO offers both petrol and professional battery top-handle options.
Battery or petrol?
The right power source depends on where, how often and how long you work.
Battery chainsaws combine low noise with instant starting, zero exhaust emissions during operation and reduced routine maintenance. They are particularly well suited to pruning, garden maintenance and work in noise-sensitive environments.
ECHO's 40V range offers options for garden users, while the 56V platform is developed for professional and more demanding applications.
Petrol chainsaws are a practical choice when you need extended working time, fast refuelling and strong performance for demanding cutting work.
They are particularly suited to regular firewood preparation, agricultural work, felling and intensive forestry applications, as well as work in locations where charging is not practical.
Find the right size and cutting equipment
More power and a longer guide bar do not automatically make a chainsaw the better choice.
Choose a guide-bar length that matches the typical diameter of the material you cut and that is approved for your chainsaw. An oversized cutting attachment adds weight and can affect balance, while a bar that is too short may not be suitable for the work.
ECHO matches specific bars and chains to each saw according to bar length, pitch, gauge and drive-link count. Always check the product specifications or operator's manual before changing the cutting equipment.
And don't look at engine displacement or battery voltage alone. Weight, balance, ergonomics and vibration reduction can make a significant difference, particularly during longer working sessions.
Depending on the model, features such as ES-Start can support easier starting, while the G-FORCE Engine Air Pre-Cleaner helps reduce air-filter maintenance on selected petrol chainsaws.
Also consider practical details such as access to chain tensioning and the availability of compatible guide bars and chains.
Choose at a glance
For pruning and light garden work:
Choose a light rear-handle chainsaw for manoeuvrability and easy handling.
For firewood and general property maintenance:
A mid-size rear-handle chainsaw provides a good balance for regular firewood preparation, limbing and small to medium tree felling.
For demanding felling and forestry:
Choose a professional felling saw designed for larger timber and intensive use.
For professional tree work:
Choose a top-handle chainsaw specifically designed for trained arborists working in trees.
The best chainsaw isn't necessarily the largest or most powerful. It is the one that matches your everyday work, feels balanced in your hands and delivers the performance you actually need.
