10 Common Starting Problems and How to Fix Them

10 Common Starting Problems

A machine that will not start does not always need a major repair.

In many cases, the cause is linked to fuel, the starting procedure, airflow or a basic maintenance issue. Work methodically and avoid repeated starting attempts without checking the machine.

The exact procedure differs between products. Always use the operator’s manual as the primary reference.

1. The Stop Switch Is in the Wrong Position

It sounds simple, but it is one of the first things to check.

What to do:

  • Confirm that the switch is in the operating position.

  • Check the control labels on your machine.

  • Follow the sequence specified in the manual.

2. The Cold-Start Procedure Was Not Followed

A cold petrol engine normally requires a specific combination of priming, choke and starter operation.

What to do:

  • Place the machine safely on the ground.

  • Set the switch to the operating position.

  • Use the purge bulb and choke exactly as instructed.

  • Move the choke to the next position when the engine first fires.

  • Avoid continuing to pull the starter with the choke fully closed.

ECHO starting systems vary by model, and selected machines use technologies such as ES-Start, automatic fast idle, Auto Choke or Electronic Control.

3. The Engine Is Flooded

Too many starting attempts with the choke activated can introduce excess fuel into the engine.

Possible signs include:

  • A strong smell of fuel

  • A wet spark plug

  • An engine that briefly fired but no longer responds

What to do:

Stop repeated attempts. Follow the flooded-engine procedure in the product’s operator’s manual. The correct sequence can vary by model.

4. The Fuel Is Old

Petrol deteriorates during storage and can cause difficult starting or unstable operation.

What to do:

  • Do not rely on fuel of uncertain age or condition.

  • Empty and refresh the fuel only according to the manual.

  • Use the correct fuel and two-stroke oil mixture.

  • Store fuel in an approved, clearly labelled container.

5. The Fuel Mixture Is Incorrect

An incorrect petrol-to-oil mixture can affect starting and may damage the engine.

What to do:

  • Check the ratio specified by ECHO.

  • Measure accurately.

  • Use suitable two-stroke engine oil.

  • Do not guess or combine unidentified fuel mixtures.

6. The Air Filter Is Dirty

A blocked air filter restricts airflow and can affect starting and performance.

What to do:

  • Remove the filter according to the manual.

  • Inspect it for dirt and damage.

  • Clean or replace it using the approved procedure.

  • Never run the machine without the filter installed.

Selected ECHO machines use heavy-duty filtration or the G-FORCE Engine Air Pre-Cleaner to reduce maintenance requirements, but the filter still requires regular inspection.

7. The Spark Plug Is Fouled or Damaged

A dirty, worn or incorrectly fitted spark plug can prevent proper ignition.

What to do:

  • Allow the engine to cool.

  • Remove and inspect the plug according to the manual.

  • Check for deposits, damage or excessive wear.

  • Replace it with the specified type when required.

  • Make sure the cap is securely refitted.

8. The Purge Bulb or Fuel Line Is Damaged

A cracked fuel line, damaged bulb or visible leak can stop fuel reaching the engine correctly.

What to do:

  • Inspect the visible fuel-system components.

  • Do not operate a leaking machine.

  • Contact an authorised ECHO dealer if components are cracked, hardened or damaged.

9. The Battery Is Not Ready

For cordless equipment, check the power source before inspecting the tool itself.

What to do:

  • Confirm that the battery is charged.

  • Allow a battery exposed to extreme temperatures to reach an appropriate operating temperature.

  • Check that it is fully inserted and locked in position.

  • Inspect the terminals for contamination or damage.

  • Use only compatible batteries and chargers.

ECHO uses separate 40V and professional 56V platforms. Batteries must be matched to the correct product platform.

10. The Machine Needs Professional Inspection

Stop troubleshooting if:

  • Fuel is leaking.

  • The starter rope is damaged.

  • The machine has suffered an impact.

  • Electrical contacts are damaged.

  • Safety controls do not operate correctly.

  • The engine still will not start after the approved checks.

An authorised ECHO dealer can inspect the fuel, ignition, compression and electrical systems safely.

Before Your Next Start

Regular maintenance prevents many starting problems.

Keep the machine ready by:

  • Using fresh, correctly mixed fuel

  • Cleaning the air filter

  • Inspecting the spark plug

  • Checking fuel lines

  • Keeping batteries correctly charged and stored

  • Following the service intervals in the operator’s manual
